The Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) is the planning and economic development agency for the City of Boston. Two hundred professionals work with city groups and development agencies to help shape the future of the city through reforms in areas such as planning, zoning, housing, and research.

Mission

The BPDA plans and guides inclusive growth in the city—­creating opportunities for everyone to live, work and connect. Through our future-focused, city-wide lens, we engage communities, implement new solutions, partner for greater impact and track progress.

Resources & Services

Planning

BPDA works with communities to shape future development while respecting each neighborhood’s past and present. Its planning initiatives seek to influence the social, economic, physical, and natural factors affecting each community.

Zoning

Boston’s Zoning Code dictates the appropriate heights, densities, and uses allowed in different areas of the City. The BPDA helps play a role in shaping zoning policy while also providing resources and tools to assist new businesses with zoning issues.

Income Restricted/Affordable Housing

The BPDA helps to create and maintain housing opportunities for Boston residents and certified artists.

Development

BPDA assists with the development of projects and provides tools on the review and tracking of individual projects.

Research

The Research department strives to understand the current environment of the city to produce quality research and targeted information that will inform and benefit the residents and businesses of Boston.
